Their opponents for the final, China, had just beaten the reigning 1995 World Cup holders Norway 5-0 in their semi-final and would prove to be the USWNT’s most difficult challenge. More than 90,000 fans watched the game in person from the Rose Bowl stands, while another 40 million watched at home on their TVs, as both teams struggled to break each other down. The game went all the way to extra time at 0-0, then to a dramatic penalty shootout. All 5 Americans scored theirs, and Brianna Scurry made a legendary save of Liu Ying’s attempt to seal a historic second Women’s World Cup win for the USA.
